Baca County is located in the southeastern corner of Colorado, where the state borders Kansas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. The county was founded on April 16, 1889, and named for Colorado pioneer and territorial legislator Felipe Baca.
Springfield is the county seat and largest town. Baca County covers approximately 2,557 square miles, the vast majority of which is land. According to the 2020 census, the county had a population of 3,506.
The county’s location, agricultural landscape, courthouse, and small communities form an important part of southeastern Colorado’s history.
